According to The Wall Street Journal, Netflix is in discussions to enter the live sports streaming market by organizing its first-ever live-streamed sporting event. The company is reportedly exploring the idea of a celebrity-driven golf tournament in Las Vegas, featuring stars from popular sports content on streaming platforms such as “Drive to Survive” and “Full Swing.” This move aligns well with Netflix’s increasing interest in sports streaming.

Live sports streaming poses challenges and high costs, with competition for prominent event deals intensifying. Netflix had previously failed to acquire Formula 1 coverage from ESPN. Establishing credibility in live sports broadcasting is a gradual process, as seen with ESPN’s initial broadcast of a slow-pitch softball game and Yahoo’s early-morning coverage of an NFL game in London.

Although Netflix encountered technical difficulties during a live reunion show in April, it successfully streamed a Chris Rock comedy special. The company has invested significantly in documentaries, with successful series like “Drive to Survive” popularizing Formula 1 in the United States. Netflix’s entry into live sports streaming aims to expand its offerings and attract a broader audience, capitalizing on the rising popularity of sports content on streaming platforms.
