A coach should not be determined based on his nationality but on his/her abilities and capabilities. If the coach is ensuring optimal performance his nationality should not matter. However, we often see that Indian athletes are of the opinion that foreign coaches are superior as compared to Indian coaches.  The prime reason for such mindset is the rule of the British Raj for 200 years which has brainwashed us, and has inculcated a thought that foreigners are superior to us Indians.

Apart, from the British Raj there are various other reasons why Indian athletes have this stigma, these include knowledge and expertise, technology, international exposure, fresher perspective, rigorous discipline & much more. In the current generation, sports have grown much more and now involves data, analytics, planning, and strategizing.  Leading sporting nations are at the forefront of research and development in sports sciences and training methodologies.

However, if we look at a broader perspective there are more cons of having a foreign coach than pros. There will always remain a cultural disconnect between Indian athletes and a foreign coach. Foreign coaches despite their expertise will not be able to understand the cultural background, dietary needs, and motivational factors of Indian athletes. This can lead to miscommunication, making it difficult for the coach to build a strong bond with the players. Foreign coaches are usually hired for a short period, to solve immediate problems this might lead to short-term gains, however, the overall development of an athlete for a longer period will not be the focal point. Foreign coaches are not involved in the domestic circuit which often results in overlooking of domestic potential. Indian coaches are often associated either directly with domestic associations or have scouts which helps them in recognizing and nurturing domestic talent. Heavy reliance on foreign coaches often results in underutilization of local talent. Hiring foreign coaches is quite expensive which includes salaries, accommodation, and travel expenses. These investments might provide positive results, but take a toll on sports federations as they drain their resources.

The coach who is selected for the position should be well-versed in the fundamental abilities that the players need to excel. The coach should be skillful in tactics and critical methods, as well as having expertise in the sports world. The best way to get the squad to perform well is things that coaches need to be aware of. It is critical to have a wealth of knowledge in a certain field and to stay updated with new advances. Top coaches are up to date on the latest findings in training, medicine, and rehabilitation. Coaches must keep up with the latest developments in information, skills, and expertise. Another important quality in a coach is motivation. He doesn’t have to be a native of any one nation to know how to motivate and assist the group. He must be able to establish a strong rapport with each team member. Only when their coaches have faith in their athletes, can they perform well.  Strong communication skills are essential for any coach, regardless of nationality. This is significant because he needs to be able to assist the team in understanding playing strategies and producing excellent players. The coach should be open to providing honest feedback on the players’ performance. Irrespective of his country, the coach must possess discipline. In order to encourage team members to trust in him, he should be an excellent listener. The team’s coach must be able to get precise information from them.

There are successful Indian coaches, and the decision of who to hire should be based on qualifications, cultural fit, and a clear understanding of the specific needs of the athletes and the sport.  It’s not just about a foreign name, but finding the right coach who can create a winning environment that leverages the best of both worlds. It’s important to spend in building a solid domestic coaching infrastructure and maybe using outside experience if the Indian sporting system is to have long-term success. The ultimate objective is to establish a coaching environment that promotes Indian athlete’s supremacy on the international scene.
