Whether it is a busy morning during the weekend at the Driving Range, or a relaxed afternoon during the weekdays, Atharv Bhatli is always seen practicing hard on most of the days of the week. He is always working hard, trying to make his shots perfect, and work on the advices that his coach gives him.
Atharv is a student of Class VII of the Army Public School, Ballygunge. A very jolly boy, Atharv is very new to the city and to the Tolly Golf Academy. Still he is an adept budding golfer who plays really well. We had the chance to engage in a small talking session in between his practice to which he readily agreed.
How often do you come to the Academy for practice?
Atharv: I come two to three days to this Academy.
How much time do you devote for your practice?
Atharv: I practice three to four hours a day every week.
As a regular student, how do you balance both golf and your academics?
Atharv: after reaching home from my golf practice, I attend my tuitions for two hours every day. Then I take some break, and then study more, so that I can balance the lessons that are taught in my school or tuition lasses and my regular golf practice.
If not golf, then which other sport would you like to play?
Atharv: Cricket. Undoubtedly, cricket.
Who is your favourite cricketer?
Atharv: My all-time favourite cricketer is AB de Villiers. And from India, I like Virat Kohli.
What is your favourite subject?
Atharv: My favourite subject is Mathematics.
If you ever get a chance to teach golf to AB de Villiers or Kohli, what all will you teach them?
Atharv: I will teach them all about the game. I will teach them about the rules, the score pattern etc. I will teach them how to play golf, entirely, as much as I know.
Who is your role model?
Atharv: My role model is Tiger Woods. I want to become like him.
Are you interested in movies or books?
Atharv: Yes, I am interested in movies, but not in books.
What is your favourite golf or sport related movie?
Atharv: My favourite movie is Slum Golf.
Where do you see yourself in the coming years?
Atharv: Like international tournaments, you know. I will play internationals, the Olympics, and travel around the world, playing in different foreign golf courses. You know I will try to win gold medals in the Olympics, and prizes in tournaments.
In your golf journey, who has been the most supportive people in your life?
Atharv: In my golf journey, my father has been the most supportive person. Also, my coach, Sreenjoy sir supports and teaches me. He is very kind and teaches me in a very good manner.
Atharv’s coach, Sreenjoy Majumdar is delighted to coach him. They share a great bond, and Atharv says that he has benefitted a lot under the guidance of his coach. Coach Sreenjoy Majumdar loves Atharv a lot. He says, “Atharv is a very sweet boy. I have been coaching him for the last couple of months, I have seen him grinding himself really hard, and I believe that someday, he is going to play really well in the national circuit and the main tours, and definitely win awards in the future.
