Brooks Koepka, one of golf’s most recognisable major champions, has announced that he will step away from LIV Golf at the conclusion of the 2025 season. His decision, framed around family commitments and a desire to spend more time at home, represents one of the most high-profile departures from the Saudi-backed league since its launch. Both Koepka and LIV Golf described the split as amicable, but the move inevitably raises questions about the future of the breakaway circuit and Koepka’s own career trajectory.

Koepka’s time with LIV began in 2022, when he signed a headline-making contract reportedly worth over $100 million. At the time, his defection from the PGA Tour was seen as a major coup for LIV, lending credibility to its challenge against golf’s traditional structures. Yet his 2025 season told a different story. Koepka struggled to find form, missing the cut in three of the four majors and failing to secure a single LIV victory. His best results were two top-10 finishes, leaving him 31st in the individual standings. For a player once defined by his dominance in majors, the downturn was stark and may have accelerated his decision to reprioritise his career.

The departure also reshapes Smash GC, the team Koepka captained throughout his LIV tenure. Leadership will now pass to Talor Gooch, ensuring continuity but underscoring the league’s challenge in retaining marquee figures. Koepka’s exit is symbolic: he was among the first major champions to embrace LIV, and his presence helped attract fans and sponsors. Losing him not only diminishes LIV’s star power but also highlights the volatility of its roster as players weigh personal priorities against financial incentives.

Speculation naturally turns to Koepka’s next chapter. While he has not confirmed a return to the PGA Tour, current rules would allow him to reapply for membership after a one-year absence from LIV competition, making late 2026 a possible window. His exemption into majors, secured by his five career victories, including the 2023 PGA Championship, ensures he will remain visible on golf’s biggest stages regardless of affiliation. Whether he pursues a full PGA Tour schedule or opts for a lighter calendar focused on majors will depend on how he balances competitive ambition with family life.
