CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – With his third win of the 2021-22 PGA TOUR Season, Sam Burns is primed to make his Presidents Cup debut at Quail Hollow Club on the U.S. Team after winning the Charles Schwab Challenge in a playoff over Scottie Scheffler to move up to No. 2 in the U.S. Team standings. Burns trails standings leader Scheffler, who was unable to convert the 54-hole lead at Colonial Country Club for what would have been his fifth victory of the season.
One week earlier, two-time U.S. Team participant Justin Thomas (2017, 2019) overcame a seven-stroke deficit in the final round of the PGA Championship to claim his 15th PGA TOUR title and first since this 2021 PLAYERS Championship. With the help of his second career PGA Championship title, Thomas sits No. 3 in the U.S. Team standings and is in position to qualify for his third consecutive Presidents Cup at a venue where he has claimed victory on TOUR (2017 PGA Championship).
Thomas has been a valued member of the U.S. Team in his two previous appearances, earning a 6-2-2 overall record that includes a perfect 4-0-0 mark in Four-Ball.
On the International Team, Chile’s Mito Pereira, who is playing his first full season on the PGA TOUR, moved inside the top 8 following a successful two-week stretch that saw the 27-year-old nearly claim the PGA Championship before settling for a T3 finish. The result moved Pereira from No. 16 to No. 8 on the International Team standings and in position for one of the eight automatic qualifying spots.
Pereira continued his form at the Charles Schwab Challenge, where he posted a T7 to move up one more position to No. 7. With fellow countryman Joaquin Niemann (No. 4 in the standings) making his Presidents Cup debut in 2019, Pereira would become the second Chilean to compete in the Presidents Cup.

International Team
The 2022 Presidents Cup International Team qualification period runs from the 2021 Open Championship through the 2022 BMW Championship. The Team will be comprised of the top eight (8) players from the Presidents Cup International Team Points List, followed by four (4) selections made by Captain Immelman on August 29, 2022.
The International Team Points System will operate similarly to that of the Official World Golf Ranking, except it will use a proprietary calculation to determine field strength and the quantity of points awarded per event. While Major Championship winners will receive 100 points and PLAYERS Championship winners will receive 80, there will be no other alternative minimum event points.
International Team Points earned from the 2022 PGA Championship through the 2022 BMW Championship will be given a 25% premium. The ranking will be determined by the average points awarded in the qualifying period.
