While most of us look forward to enjoying a lazy Sunday, where we would wake up a little late, have a delicious breakfast with family, and then lazily spend the day watching the television, young golfers from the Protouch Golf Academy wait for Sundays to come. The eager students wait enthusiastically for Sundays to come to the Driving Range, Tollygunge Club, to practice golf in the golf course at Protouch Golf Academy. Naturally Protouch sees busy Sundays.
On such a hustling Sunday, we had the chance to talk to Shiven Kedia, a student of the sixth standard, from the La Martiniere School For Boys, who had come for his regular training and practice. Shiven was excited to share his experience as a student of the Protouch Golf Academy, and playing and winning tournaments.
What makes your Sundays different from the Sundays that other people or your friends spend?
Shiven: Today, I came here to play some golf and practice the skills that I have learnt till date.
Who is your golf coach at Protouch? How long are you playing here?
Shiven: Before you came, I was playing with my coach, Mr. Swapan Tung. Sir has been teaching me for one and a half years now.
How well do you bond with your coach?
Shiven: My coach, Mr. Tung is a really good coach. He is very helpful, and has always encouraged me to do even better and better. He loves me very much.
It has been one and a half years since you started at playing golf? Do you think you have made any progress?
Shiven: In one and a half years, I have taken a leap from 50 yards to 150 yards. So, anybody can spot the difference.
What do you like about the golf course at Protouch Golf Academy?
Shiven: The golf course at Protouch, that is situated at the Driving Range, inside the premises of Tollygunge Club, is pretty big. It has 18 holes, and there are a lot of obstacles which could really help you improve as a golfer in the future. So, it is a good golf course where you could practice.
Does your academy host tournaments? Have you played in any of the tournaments?
Shiven: Yes, yes, Protouch organizes tournament very often. I like playing tournaments. They are fun. I won the first prize in chipping and became the first runner up in putting contest from the intermediate category during the Junior Skills Competition (May, 2024). I also became the winner of the putting contest this month in the Junior Skills Competition (August, 2024). See, I told you, sir has said, I have improved a lot.
Which is your second favourite sport after golf?
Shiven: Tennis, probably. Also, badminton.
Where do you see yourself as a golfer in the near future?
Shiven: I would like to be in the Olympics, and play golf, and represent my country in front of the other foreign countries. Oh, I want to win a gold medal. With the help that I get from my coach, I am able to reach from 50 to 150 yards in a year and a half. I learn so much at Protouch Golf Academy and I will easily become a real golfer like Tiger Woods if I continue practising.
