The first round of the 2025 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship started in tough weather in Scotland at Trump International Golf Links. Michael Jonzon from Sweden managed to come out on top by scoring a calm 2-under-par 70.
The course had hard fairways, thick rough, and tricky winds, making it difficult for everyone to score well right from the beginning. Jonzon showed great patience and control. He carefully picked his shots and handled the tight areas of the course and the tricky greens better than most. He had four birdies and only two bogeys, which is really good considering the wind could reach up to 35 kilometers an hour.
Right behind Jonzon is Sean Whiffin, who finished with a strong score of 1-under 71. He did well on the first half of the course and putted confidently. His performance while many famous golfers struggled could be important as the tournament goes on.
Three other players—Maarten Lafeber, Jean-François Remesy, and Carlos Balmaseda—all ended the day at even-par 72, keeping their hopes alive in the tournament. Balmaseda especially impressed the crowd when he made a great recovery on the par-5 8th hole, sinking a long hybrid shot to save par after hitting a bad tee shot.
Some well-known golfers had a hard time getting started. José María Olazábal, Paul McGinley, and local favorite Colin Montgomerie all faced challenges with the wind, and Montgomerie ended up with a disappointing 7-over 79.
Local star Paul Lawrie did a little better with a score of 2-over 74. He showed some great skills but lost a few shots towards the end. He will need to play better on Friday if he wants to move up the leaderboard.
