The Masters 2025 teed off in style at Augusta National, with golf greats Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tom Watson officiating the opening shots. But it was Justin Rose who commanded the attention on Day 1.
Rose fired a beautiful 7-under-par 65, with eight birdies and a 31 on the front nine. He placed himself three shots ahead of the field and registered the fifth time he’s been in the lead after Round 1 at the Masters — a record-breaking instance that puts him ahead of Jack Nicklaus.
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler maintained the pressure with a good 4-under 68, making two long birdie putts to remain in contention.
Rory McIlroy, in pursuit of that elusive career Grand Slam, ended even par. Though he got off to a good start, two double bogeys on crucial holes thwarted his progress.
There were thrilling moments as well — Fred Couples eagled 14, and Collin Morikawa did the same on 13.
With the leaderboard close and conditions tough, Round 2 will be full of fireworks. Rose might have the lead, but Augusta always seems to surprise.
