DUBLIN, Ohio – Rickie Fowler is going back to The Open Championship. He got the last spot in the Open Qualifying Series after a tough showing at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday.
Fowler and Brandt Snedeker both finished seventh at 1-under-par, but Fowler won the tiebreaker for the Open spot because he was higher up in the Official World Golf Ranking. Fowler came in at No. 124 and beat Snedeker, who was No. 430.
It was a close call for qualification at Muirfield Village. Fowler needed to get up and down from the rough on the 18th hole after making a bogey on the 17th hole to stay tied with Snedeker. He came through under pressure, hitting a smart pitch to within two feet and calmly sinking the putt to secure his spot at Royal Portrush for his 14th Open Championship appearance.
Fowler knew that Snedeker had shot a great 7-under 65, which was the lowest round of the day, but he wasn’t sure right away what the qualification rules were. He got confirmation soon after he finished, and his wife Allison and daughters Maya and Nellie met him outside the scoring area. To mark the occasion, the family posed with an Open Championship flag.
Fowler is still gaining momentum in his quest for more major championship appearances now that he is confirmed to return to The Open.
