The IGU 124th Amateur Golf Championship of India, that began on Tuesday, December 16, in the prestigious Tollygunge Club, Kolkata, came to an end today, on Sunday, December 21, with Sukhman Singh winning the tournament, and lifting the prestigious trophy.

The first two days of the IGU 124th Amateur Golf Championship was played in stroke-play format, from which 32 players qualified for the second round of the tournament, that is, the match-play rounds. In the match play rounds that followed from Thursday, December 23, 16 players qualified for the Pre Quarter Final Match Play round. Further, 8 players qualified for the Quarter Final Match Play round, followed by 4 players who qualified for the Semi Final Match Play round.

From the exciting Semi Final Match Play round, Sukhman Singh of Uttar Pradesh and Harman Sachdeva from Haryana qualified to compete against each other in the 36- holes Final Match Play round on Sunday, December 21, 2025.

Sukhman had a difficult start as Harman remained 1 up over Sukhman consecutively after the first two holes. As they remained all square over the third, fourth, fifth and sixth holes consecutively, Sukhman’s game gained momentum.

Sukhman Singh: Winner

Though Harman put up tough chase, Sukhman ultimately won the IGU 124th Amateur Golf Championship of India with 7 up after 29 holes.

An elated Sukhman said, “My father has always been my inspiration from childhood. I was five or six years old, when I used to accompany him at the Noida Golf Club for his practice sessions, and that is when my passion for golf was born. Since then I have played, won many tournaments, and made cuts and have been to the top in the IGU Order of Merit. But this win is special. As a celebrated amateur golfer, even my father missed his chance of listing this prestigious trophy. Today, I take this trophy home, not only for myself, but also for my father, my inspiration. Truly, truly, a proud moment for me and for him”.

Harman Sachdeva: Runner Up.

Talking about the level of competition, Harman Sachdeva, runner up of the IGU 124th Amateur Golf Championship of India, said, “It was a fierce rivalry between us – no friendship, no camaraderie. I have pretty much grown up while playing golf with Sukhman from my childhood, but today was different. We both wanted to beat each other. It is my honour and achievement to play the final round match play of such a prestigious tournament. Obviously, Sukhman is a great golfer, and today was his day, and so he came out on that. Congrats to him!”

The Semi Final Match Play round, as well as the 36 holes Final Match Play rounds were played under harsh weather conditions, as December 20 and December 21 happened to be the coolest days of the year in Kolkata, with chilling cold win blowing throughout the day, especially early in the morning, during the tee off. While weather played a great role in shaping the Final Match Play round, Harman remarked, “I kept reminding myself that no matter how hard it is for me, it is as hard for him as well. I knew if it is difficult for me, it is difficult for him as well. I just knew I had to play along the cold wind, and along the weather. I kept my calm, focused on my game, and tried doing what is best for e to do on the course”.

Mentioning that the tee shot at the 6th gave him the boost to keep performing better under the pressure and tough competition that he faced from Harman, Sukhman said, “I kept praying so that I didn’t have to face Harman in the finals. I know how hard competing against him can be, since I have played many tournaments against him from childhood. My biggest take away from this tournament would be being able to make the cut after the stroke-play round, and then till the final round, and playing against Vinamra Anand, the best match play golfer I have competed against till date. One may have set backs, one might play bad in tournaments, but my mantra is to not give up ever. Every day is a new day, every match is a new match, and every tournament, one has to make a fresh start from the scratch. I will always keep following the mantra, ‘There is only one good shot in golf – the next shot’. I think that made my game better over the seven to ten rounds played at Tolly”.
