If there’s one thing I want you to take away about making good wedge shots, it’s this: your rhythm is super important. You can have a fantastic grip, a perfect stance, and a new wedge, but if you hurry your swing or slow down at the wrong moment, the ball won’t react the way you want it to.

What Do I Mean by Rhythm?
Rhythm is just the flow of your swing, how your backswing and downswing connect. It’s not about swinging quickly or slowly; it’s about being smooth and consistent each time.

Think of it like playing music. You can play a tune either quickly or slowly, but if the beat changes suddenly, it sounds off. The same goes for golf: if your rhythm isn’t steady, it will affect how you hit the ball and how far it goes.

Why Rhythm Helps Your Wedges:

Better Control of Distance – Wedges are all about knowing how far to hit the ball. If your rhythm is the same each time, you just adjust how far back you swing to change the distance.

Cleaner Hits – A smooth rhythm helps you make good contact with the ball and the ground in the right order. If you hurry, you hit it wrong; if you go too slow, you might dig too deep.

More Spin – A good rhythm leads to solid hits, allowing the grooves to grab the ball and make it stop where you want.

Feeling Calm Under Pressure – When you get nervous, you often speed up. If you’ve practiced your rhythm, you can rely on it and focus on making the shot you need.

How to Practice Your Wedge Rhythm

1. Count It Out
In your mind, say “one” as you go back and “two” as you follow through. Keep the time between the counts even.

2. Finish Smoothly
Don’t just focus on hitting the ball. Think about swinging through to a stable finish. The ball is just something you hit along the way.

3. Same Rhythm, Different Backswing
For a 40-yard shot, take a shorter backswing while keeping the same rhythm you would for an 80-yard shot. This way, your rhythm stays the same; only the swing length changes.

With wedges, you’re not trying to show off power. You want to leave the ball close to the hole. And the trick to that is having a rhythm you can count on every single time.
