Stevens Point, Wis. – Bernhard Langer, the 65-year-old German golfing legend, etched his name in the record books once again, as he secured his 46th career victory on the PGA Tour Champions. Langer’s remarkable achievement came after he clinched the U.S. Senior Open title at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
In the final round, Langer showcased his immense skill and composure, carding a solid 1-under-par 70. This performance not only earned him the tournament victory but also allowed him to surpass fellow Hall of Famer Hale Irwin, with whom he was previously tied for the most wins in the history of the PGA Tour Champions.
Reflecting on his incredible accomplishment, Langer attributed his success to his exceptional genes. “I have my mother that’s going to be 100 on August 4th, so I think I have good genes,” he said with a smile. The veteran golfer, who has already set records as the oldest winner on the 50-and-over tour, expressed his hope to continue competing for several more years.
Langer entered the back nine of the final round with a commanding seven-stroke lead. Although he faced a challenge on the tree-lined course with thick rough, he held his nerve and secured a two-stroke victory over Steve Stricker, despite bogeys on the final three holes. Langer acknowledged the significance of achieving this feat at the U.S. Senior Open, highlighting the strong field that included Stricker and Jerry Kelly on their home grounds.
The German golfing maestro finished the tournament with an impressive score of 7-under 277. Notably, he was among only eight players who managed to break par throughout the entire week. Langer, who shattered the tournament age record previously held by Allen Doyle, expressed his enduring love for the game despite the challenges that come with age. He humorously mentioned the occasional doubts he had, saying, “There have been odd weeks when I thought, ‘What were you doing out here? Go home and play with the grandkids.'”
With this latest triumph, Langer also extended his record for senior major wins to 12. Having previously emerged victorious in the 2010 U.S. Senior Open at Sahalee, located outside Seattle, Langer’s dominance in senior golf continues to grow, cementing his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
As Langer’s 46th career win reverberates throughout the golfing world, fans and fellow professionals alike celebrate his incredible achievement. With his unwavering dedication and unparalleled talent, Bernhard Langer has proven time and again that age is just a number when it comes to his golfing prowess.
