As a beginner, or as a junior golfer, it is not always enough to hit longer shots, perfecting golf swings or mastering short game. It is important for the coach to break the game into smaller parts to make it interesting to the junior golfers, and therefore, easy to learn. This is where golf drills come into action, as golf drills turn learning golf into a fun activity. Instead of hitting long shots and practicing short game, drills help junior golfers to focus on the technicalities of the game in a controlled way. Drills simplify the complex skills of golf into easy and enjoyable patterns, and teach the children to play with more confidence.

Drills help lay the foundation of the various skills of golf among junior golfers at an early age. Drills engage the minds of juniors, thereby building concentration, and makes the game less exhausting or boring for children. Simply speaking, golf drills help in developing interest on the game in the minds of junior golfers, while encouraging discipline and consistency, and reduces risk of injuries by impacting coordination, muscle memory, and balance. Junior golfers understand the value of practice, which help them in long term development and brings about a holistic development in their game.

Here are 8 important golf drills that prove to be beneficial for the holistic development of junior golfers, and any beginner golfer.

1.Grip Check Drill

  1. Grip Check Drill: Grip check drills impacts control on the club and correct placement of the hand on the club. Without swinging the club, junior golfers should be taught to hold and practice gripping the club repeatedly.

2.Half Swing Drill

2. Half Swing Drill: Swinging the club halfway back to the nine o’ clock position, and then halfway through, can a junior golfer be taught the half swing drill which teaches the junior golfers a balanced control and swing mechanisms without putting a lot of pressure on the muscles while teaching them the art of a good golf swing.

3.Slow Motion Swing Drill

3. Slow Motion Swing Drill: To build awareness and control on the club and the golf swing, junior golfers should be taught the slow-motion swing drill. By performing the swing very slowly, junior golfers are taught to improve tempo, kinesthetics, and better sequencing.

4. Mirror Swing Drill

4. Mirror Swing Drill: Mirror swing drill is by far the most important golf drill, popular not just among junior golfers, but also among senior golfers, professional golfers and golf coaches. Mirror swing drill is simply practicing swing mechanism in front of a mirror, which swing mechanisms, swing positions and posture of the body while taking a swing.

5. Short Putt Drill.

5. Short Putt Drill: Short putt drills improve stroke path. While golfers find long shots to be easier to hit, short game, mainly putting, is what junior golfers, and even senior golfers struggle with. Putting the ball into the hole is made easy with short putt drills. Repeated putting practice from a closer range by narrowing the entrance to the hole or by placing a coin behind the ball, helps golfers to build confidence. Keeping the head still, repeated practice of short putts increase accuracy and helps a golfers sink in small putts, and slowly, even longer putts with great ease.

6. Feet Together Drill.

6. Feet Together Drill: Swinging with the feet posed closer together forces the weight to a more stable spot. It also promotes a more consistent club arrival. Though it results in a slight loss of distance, it improves balance and coordination, and harmonises the swing of the arm with the rotation of the body while taking a swing.

7. Chipping Accuracy Drill: This is another important short game hack, which makes perfecting short game, particularly chipping, easier and interesting for junior golfers. Marking a desired area on the green with a towel, or a hula-hoop, a target is fixed, and the aim is to chip the ball inside the circle. This drill enhances the precision of the landing zone, controls the distance, and develops confidence to chip in shots at a targeted distance on the green.

8. One-Handed Swing Drill

8. One-Handed Swing Drill: One-handed swing drill mainly involves making a golf swing with the lead hand, and impacts the feel, rhythm, body rotation, clubface awareness, tempo, and gives a more connected athletic golf swing. It also strengthens control and balance.

There are plenty of other golf drills which are very effective in enhancing the overall performance of a junior golfer, such as, the ball position drill, balance hold drill, swing path drill, breathing drill etc. All these drills make practice enjoyable and engaging for the junior golfers who have just begun to learn golf, and also benefits the experienced ones, and even the pro players.
