Francesco Molinari (-7) surged to the top of the leaderboard in Round 1 of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic with a clinical seven-under 65, showcasing vintage control and composure at Emirates Golf Club. The Italian’s bogey-free round featured pinpoint iron play and confident putting, giving him a two-shot lead heading into Friday.

Mikael Lindberg (-5) followed closely with a solid 67, navigating the Majlis Course with precision and poise. The Swede’s round included five birdies and no dropped shots, keeping him firmly in contention in this Rolex Series event.

A trio of players sit tied for third at four-under, including Joel Girrbach (-4), JC Ritchie (-4), and Johannes Veerman (-4). Girrbach and Ritchie both carded 68s, while Veerman opened Round 2 at -1 through two holes, building on his opening 69. Veerman’s aggressive approach early in the second round suggests he’s pushing to close the gap.

A tightly packed group at three-under includes Nicolai von Dellingshausen (-3), Andrea Pavan (-3), Manuel Elvira (-3), Wenyi Ding (-3), and Yuto Katsuragawa (-3). All five players posted 69s in Round 1, keeping themselves within striking distance of the lead.

With calm morning conditions giving way to swirling afternoon winds, scoring proved tougher for later starters. The Majlis Course demanded accuracy off the tee and creativity around firm greens, rewarding those who kept their nerve.
As the tournament heads into Round 2, Molinari’s experience and early momentum make him the man to watch, but with Rolex Series points and a $9 million purse on the line, expect fierce competition from a stacked field.
