Rory McIlroy finally achieved his dream by winning the Masters at Augusta National on Sunday. After 14 years of trying, he beat Justin Rose in a sudden-death play-off to win the famous Green Jacket. McIlroy missed a par putt that could have won him the tournament in regular play, but he made a birdie on the first extra hole to seal the victory. Overcome with emotion, he roared and dropped to the ground in tears of joy.
“This was 14 years in the making,” McIlroy said, remembering how he lost a big lead in the 2011 Masters. “All the hard work and heartbreak led to this moment.”
He has now won all four major golf titles – the US Open, The Open, US PGA, and now the Masters – making him only the sixth player ever to complete the career Grand Slam. He is also the first European to do so. It was a tough loss for Justin Rose, who fought hard after a poor third round. Despite falling short, he showed great spirit in pushing McIlroy to the end.
