Saturday afternoon saw heated arguments and chaos between Europe’s Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood, and America’s Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler and caddies at the Bethpage Black during their four-ball match.
American golfers were having difficult rounds since the 2025 Ryder Cup commenced, and the tension caused at the 15th green made it even worse for all at Bethpage.
Justin Rose was lining up his 15-foot birdie at the 15th green at Bethpage Black, when Greg Bodine, DeChambeau’s caddy came back to read DeChambeau’s putt, and stood close to Rose’s line. While Rose was busy analyzing his birdie putt, Bodine, who was close to Rose’s line, was asked to back off.
“I was waiting to putt, the boys were obviously working on their read, obviously going through a lot of their sort of whatever, calculations and bits and pieces, so I sort of waited a few seconds,” Rose said. “Then I felt like they came up again, and I was like, ‘It’s my putt, right?”
Rose, who had made his putt, also jeered his celebration at DeChambeau, whose celebration was also subdued, when he rolled his putt to the hole.
This led to an exchange of heated words among the players and their caddies, which continued till the 16th tee box. While Fleetwood and his caddy joined the heated conversation, Scheffler’s caddy Ted Scott got into a verbal fight with the Francesco Molinari, the Vice Captain of the European team. Finally, Fleetwood ad to take charge of calming the chaotic situation down between Scott and Molinari.
“Maybe I didn’t say it as politely as I could have said it in the moment, but by no means was there any disrespect or anything like that,” Rose said. “But obviously it was taken the wrong way.”
With tensions already surging between the American and European stars on the pretext of the latter winning the first session 3-1, the US golfers’ frustration was deep rooted in the performance that made them trail behind their European competitors. On the other hand, the Bethpage crowd was hostile and the behavioural display from their end was also beyond acceptance.
