News

The drama was back on Northern Ireland’s windswept coast as Royal Portrush hosted the world’s best for Round 1 of the 153rd Open Championship. And what a welcome it was—six players now lead at 4-under-par following an enthralling opening day in which precision, poise, and patience dominated the leaderboard.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Harris English, Thorbjørn Olesen, Li Haotong, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Tommy Fleetwood all began their bid with clinical opening rounds of 67, cutting through the battered Dunluce Links with precision and poise. All maximized scoring chances while avoiding major errors on the card—a recipe for success on a course infamous for biting back.

Fitzpatrick and Fleetwood were especially a source of roars around the gallery, with Fitzpatrick holing major birdies on the back nine and Fleetwood riding the home crowd to get into contention. Bezuidenhout and English worked quietly to compile steady rounds, and Olesen and Li reminded everyone once more why they are major players in justly major conditions.

Tied in second just a stroke back, a group at 3-under in pursuit are Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Jordan, Scottie Scheffler, and Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana. Scheffler remained his usual unflappable self, while Hatton’s combustible competitiveness kept him near the top. Jordan and Kaewkanjana were steady throughout, offering tidy rounds with pockets of brilliance.

Four others are at 2-under—Rickie Fowler, Rasmus Højgaard, Aaron Rai, and Brian Harman—each holding themselves in touching distance of the leaders. Fowler, who began scorching, lost a shot late but remained in red figures. Harman, the defending champion, played a subdued but steadying round, with eyes fixed on momentum going into Friday.

Portrush Plays Fair—For Now

Royal Portrush showed just sufficient mercy in Round 1. The breeze was bearable, and the greens accommodating, but the rough merciless, and bunkers savage. Scoring could be done—but only for those who paid due respect to the course and shot flawlessly.

With weather set to change over the next few days, Round 2 could witness the leaderboard take a radical turn. The course will only become more challenging, and the players sitting a handful of strokes off the pace are well aware of how rapidly luck and momentum can shift in links golf.

Eyes on the Jug

Currently, the battle for the Claret Jug is open to everyone. Six leaders. A strong chasing pack. A classic course. And just one victor.
