The 125th U. S. Amateur Championship at The Olympic Club had an unexpected twist. Mason Howell from Georgia, who is only 18 and the 63rd seed, made an incredible journey to win the Havemeyer Trophy by beating Jackson Herrington from Tennessee with a strong score of 7 & 6 in the final match.

A Historic Place

The Lake Course at The Olympic Club, known for being a tough challenge in championship golf, has added another impressive story to its long history. This event marked the first time the U. S. Amateur returned since 2007, welcoming 312 competitors, each with a handicap index of 0.4 or better. After two rounds of play, the top 64 players moved on to match play, where Howell began what would turn out to be an amazing week.

Howell’s Road to Victory

Even though he wasn’t very well-known and was ranked outside the top 350 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Howell stood out with his calm and steady game. He defeated several higher-ranked players on his way to the final and then played nearly perfectly against Herrington.

Howell’s win was the biggest margin in a U. S. Amateur final in more than ten years. He won 11 of the 30 holes played, often making solid pars, and always came back strong whenever he faced a challenge.

What’s Next

Winning this trophy gives Howell more than just the impressive Havemeyer Trophy. As the U. S. Amateur champion, he gets invited to the 2026 Masters, the U. S. Open, and the Open Championship, plus a guaranteed spot on the 2025 Walker Cup team. This win is a huge opportunity for someone who was mostly unknown outside of junior golf in Georgia.

Other Notable Performances

Jackson Herrington made it to the final match after an impressive win in the semifinals, showing he could handle pressure well.

Niall Shiels Donegan, who is from Mill Valley, excited local fans by reaching the semifinals, making himself a favourite among the crowd.

John Daly II, the son of a two-time major champion, made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Howell.

Looking Forward

For Howell, this victory connects him with famous players like Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods, who all won the U. S. Amateur before him. Although it’s too early to make direct comparisons, his calmness and skill at the Olympic Club suggest he has a bright future ahead.

As the Havemeyer Trophy heads out of San Francisco with its youngest champion since the mid-1990s, it’s obvious that the 2025 U. S. Amateur has brought a new name into the world of golf.
